I love the look of stainless steel appliances…but I have seen them in other homes, and they always look dirty, smudged etc. I have heard it is really tough to keep them from looking like this. Anybody regret buying them due to the cleaning factor? And can anyone offer alternatives to get the look without the smudges or without going to basic white??

No way…stainless steel appliances are totally worth the effort. In fact, the effort is minimal. You buy a stainless steel spray and it cleans up quickly. Just make the cleaning part of your daily chores or even weekly and the look alone is the pay-off. I can’t own anything but stainless now.
take a clean cloth and put a little cooking oil on it. rub it on the stainless steel and rub it in, it will remove the smudges, fingerprints, etc. it takes a bit of rubbing but looks great when done.
I have a housecleaning job and all I do to clean them is use some window cleaner and a micro-fiber cloth. I have used the special stainless steel wipes but they really aren’t good for getting chunks of food off.
I have no regrets. Smudges add a look of life to the kitchen I think. I am not talking a dirty messy kitchen. But if always so shiny, seems a bit sterile and not as welcoming to me. Nothing is perfect… hee hee. I just wipe with dry cloth now and then, between cleanings.
I didn’t buy them just for that reason. After trying to keep a toaster or blender shiny without fingerprints or smudges, why would I want all the big appliances with the same problem?!
I hate mine. They are nice to look at if no one touches them. Every finger print shows. They are a pain in the a—
yes, touch them and they are smudged.
i do interior faux and speciality finishes and murals…most of the homes i work in have the stainless kitchen appliances, these are people who: yes have gobs of $$$, but no they do not squander it, they spend wisely. in my experience, it cleans up easily and quickly (having smudged the fridge more than once, i think i can say that). i don’t think you’d want an alternative, if there were such a thing…maybe copperclad. go with the stainless, kido…i don’t think you will regret it.
Here’s an alternative: I bought a Kenmore “Satin” fridge earlier this year. The front looks like Stainless Steel, but it’s not. You don’t get the smudges and it cleans with a damp, soft cloth.
My sister has them and HATES them for that very reason.
